Calaveras Lake is located about 15 miles southeast of San Antonio in Bexar County, on Calaveras Creek, a tributary of the San Antonio River.

In addition to serving as cooling water for a number of power plants, Calaveras Lake supports recreation. Popular activities include fishing, boating, camping, picnicking, and hiking. (Sailboats are prohibited on the lake.) Public facilities are operated by Thousand Trails Management Services. Calaveras Lake has been stocked with many species of fish including red drum, hybrid striped bass, catfish, and largemouth bass.

The Calaveras Creek Dam and Lake are owned and managed by CPS (City Public Service) Energy of San Antonio for cooling to a complex of power plants and for recreational purposes. Authorization (Water Right Permit No. 2507) was issued by the State Board of Water Engineers on February 7, 1968. Construction of the dam started on September 1, 1967 and was completed in August 1969. Deliberate impoundment of water began in January 1969.
